Safety in the studio

A few words about safety in an unfamiliar environment :

Even the simplest of recording sessions will involve long microphone and other cables between the control room (where the tape decks, monitoring and other equipment reside) and the live room where you will perform. Please take great care when walking around that you don’t trip over them.

Also, please don’t stand or tread on cables or connectors as they can easily be damaged.

Microphone stands are there to support microphones and not to support you! Please don’t lean on them or touch them at all – the noise will affect the recording. Microphones on boom-stands can easily be knocked over so please give these an extra-wide berth.

Talking of microphones, NEVER, NEVER deliberately tap or hit a microphone, blow into it or shout into it unexpectedly! Not only could you cause serious damage to what is a very sensitive and valuable piece of equipment, you might damage the hearing of someone you might not be able to see who is monitoring on headphones. At the very least you will not be the most popular person in the room!

Electrical safety

The electrical system at is protected by multiple earth leakage devices which are designed to cut off the supply should any faulty equipment be connected to the mains or any potentially dangerous electrical fault develop.

If you have brought your own equipment (keyboard, amplifier etc.) into the studio, please don’t take offence if the engineers give it a quick test for electrical safety before connecting it to their mixing desk. They aren’t being snooty – just making sure that neither they nor you are likely to get a nasty shock! And, that it isn’t likely to trip the main fuseboard and bring the whole proceeding to a premature halt.
